Ducks-hoond, not dash-hound
This dog was bred in Germany to hunt badger and other burrowing animals and its name means "badger dog".
Coat: Three varieties, smooth, long and wire. The short, smooth coat is easiest to look after; the longhaired is attractive, with feathering and a tail flag; and and the wirehaired coat is like a rough-coated terrier's fur. They come in many colours, commonly red, brown and black, with or without tan markings.
Weight: Two sizes. Standard- around 12 kg. Miniature- not more than 5 kg.
This breed is a long and short with a level back. They are great family and housedogs when raised properly. It is preferable that children are past the toddler stage. They are good watchdogs, and are usually wary of strangers. They enjoy walks, but can get enough exercise around the home. They can develop spinal problems because of their long backs and short legs, so activites involving jumping and stair-climbing are to be avoided. They put on weight easily if over fed. A fortnightly bath and a quick brush will take care of the smooth coat. Wirehairs and longhairs need regular brushing and a trim twice a year.
The origin of the Dalmaltian is hazy, it's to be seen in Eygyptian reliefs so it is an ancient breed. They are used for hunting and as watchdogs.

This breed is very energetic. They like plenty of human companionship and given the correct amount of attention and training make good house pets and watchdogs. They can be trained to a high level of obedience. They are usually good around other pets, you should be careful with them around strange dogs. They have large litters, up to 15 pups!
